NAME: ANJELA KUJUR

PLACE: ATTATREEKHAT TEA ESTATE, UDALGURI, ASSAM

PROFILE: COMMUNITY VIDEO PRODUCER

DESCRIPTION: Anjela a student pursuing her high school education is very skilled at using the camera to portray the lifestyle and culture of her tribes in her tea garden. She enjoys interviewing and researching issues that affect her tea garden community.Anjela and her family have been the victim of domestic violence due to her father’s excessive alcoholism problems. Today her mother works with a team of women who are busy working against shutting liquor dens in their area.

Anjela’s dream is to completely abolish alcohol from her community.

” We were worthless people before joining this CVU. Our only hope was to work in the tea garden as our parents did. By learning new skills of making video and taking photographs we feel we can do much more. We have the tools to change the world.”


NAME: JULIE TANTY

PLACE: PANEERI TEA ESTATE, UDALGURI, ASSAM

PROFILE: COMMUNITY VIDEO PRODUCER

DESCRIPTION: Julie Tanty has been a teacher in her community since the last 9 years. Julie’s ability to work with people and educate them has grown in ways she has never thought about before. Julie’s training has empowered her to understand issues and write stories that would help communicate issues of her community to a larger audience. Today Julie has managed to achieve her dream through Jawa, where she understands the power she holds of bringing in change in her community in Assam.

” I love teaching and all I ever wanted to do in life was to teach my people, to see them educated and help them understand the basic things needed in life. Now I am teaching a much larger community with my skills.”


NAME: KHEDEN LAL MUNDA

PLACE: BHOOTEACHANG TEA ESTATE, UDALGURI, ASSAM

PROFILE: COMMUNITY VIDEO PRODUCER

DESCRIPTION: Kheden Lal Munda shares most of the traits of his father Sanika Munda who was an active leader in the tea gardens. Sanika Munda, ex-president and secretary of 12 tea gardens in Udalguri District of Assam had  struggled to bring justice regarding many management-labour related issues. Kheden’s is passionate and eager to grasp every technical and creative aspect of the video camera and use the medium of films to create positive action in his community.

” I wish to see other youth like me bring about change in areas that our fathers and mothers were struggling for. This camera that we have now learnt to use will strengthen our plans to bring about positive change in the tea gardens in Assam.I love making films on my community as it is a good way of showing people across the tea gardens the amount of similarity they share amongst each other. We are so many tribes living together yet there is so much of similarity amongst us.”

 


NAME: DIPALI GORH

PLACE: BAMUNJULI TEA ESTATE, UDALGURI, ASSAM

PROFILE: COMMUNITY VIDEO PRODUCER

DESCRIPTION: Women in tea gardens don’t usually have the right to good education. When a mother goes to work in the gardens it is usually assumed that the daughter of the house has to step in and take up all the responsibilities onto herself, thus forfeiting education and other development activities that are need for the development of a female. Dipali too would have uneducated too if her mother had’nt stepped in and forced her daughter to be educated. Today young Dipali has completed her class X exams and has learnt many skills of video production from the training of Video Volunteers held in Assam. She is the only girl in her community who is so highly qualified which helps her receive a great amount of respect from her tea garden Managers and other women.

“I am so happy to learn to take photos. I never knew what a camera was, never touched it or never understood its importance. Now its the best thing I ever have learnt to use and to bring change in my community with.”


NAME: SIMON NAG

PLACE: NONAIPARA TEA ESTATE, UDALGURI, ASSAM

PROFILE: COMMUNITY VIDEO PRODUCER

DESCRIPTION: Simon Nag had been teaching in the public school in his community before joining Jawa. Simon enjoys every aspect of video production and has realized the power of video in bringing about change in his community. Simon Nag currently counsels people to bring an end / decline in their habits of alcoholism , absenteeism from work and many other issues within his community. He takes immense pleasure in educating people both verbally and through films so that one day they wouldn’t be  ignorant towards the development of their  community at large.

” After I saw the reactions of my people seeing the film we have personally made, I was touched. I myself hadn’t believed too much in positive change through film. Now I am motivated to do even greater as I now believe that anything is possible.”


NAME: MANJULA SABAR

PLACE: DIMAKUSI TEA ESTATE, UDALGURI, ASSAM

PROFILE: COMMUNITY VIDEO PRODUCER

DESCRIPTION: Manjula Sabar has a vast experience and knowledge of her culture and takes pride in participating in the activities of her tea garden. The tea garden community has rewarded her with 5 trophies and many medals that she has won in various cultural performances across the tea gardens of South Assam.  Manjula runs a night school for tea gardens workers in Dimakusi tea estate who are keen on learning the basics of reading and writing. Manjula’s dream is to see her community completely educated.

” I always wanted to see my community move forward by being educated and literate. I am seeing the spark now lighting up in many women who had initially lost hope in my community. My night school is where most of this change is taking place. I can see the women being more expressive and can now freely express most of their ideas and experiences.”

    Very encouraging attempt to eradicate social evils.Good luck to you all.I too have been fighting for the same causes.Besides,being a nature lover,I work for the conservation of flora and fauna of Udalguri district of Assam.Organized a programme called “Your voice against superstition”,where students of the district will have a face to face discussion with senior experts on the matter covering topics like witch hunting,dog and snake bite etc on August 11 /2011 at 10 AM at Deputy Commissioners conference hall,Udalguri.I also report for The Assam Tribune and Assam Times
